It does require 5 D batteries but its super bright with many different levels of brightness. I left it on all night one night and it didn't die.

Dorcy no longer supports the app! Total screwjob! I guess I should be grateful I didn't pay full price for it, but STILL! I wrote the company and gave them a piece of my mind, to no avail, of course.

The lantern can operate very well without the app including dim-ability. Which is good because the android app is no longer available in the app store (although with some searching I was able to download it from apkpure, titled "Dorcy App Controlled Lantern").
The app does add some functionality (weather forecasts, dimming, morse code and auto on & off based on proximity to the lantern) but I can't really see myself ever using most of it. That being said once I tracked down the app, pairing was easy and it seemed responsive.
Once you loaded this thing up with 6 D size batteries you have got a pretty large and heavy lantern on your hands. While it is designed to hang over head in a tent, I would be extremely hesitant to hang something this heavy in a tent.
The included headlamp is a nice bonus, but it is quite simple and cheap. -

With that, come power outages. After a recent power outage that lasted into the night, we needed a simple source for light that didn't involve electricity. This lantern was our solution. It is bright enough to light one room, but a little shadowy beyond that. Easy to carry from room to room and we hung it on our chandelier to give plenty of light to play games or read while we waited for our electricity to come back on. It is operable with or without the app. It's very sturdy, hefty, and balanced. We like it!
