4.0 out of 5 stars. So far, so goodVerified Buyer Reviewed by Emily from Bay Area, CA on Saturday, August 4, 2018I'll preface this review by saying this is my first time owning a pack of this size -- I've previously backpacked with a 65+ liter pack and day hiked with a 28 liter pack, but I wanted something in between for smaller overnight/weekend trips or larger day loads. This pack seems to fit the bill perfectly. So far I've taken it on an overnight trial run involving about 18 miles of hiking, 13 with a full overnight load (tent, sleeping bag, food & stove, water) and a 5 mile day hike after having set up camp. Although it's a much larger capacity than I'm used to for day hiking, the excess space cinches down quite nicely with all the compression straps, and I found the pack to be even more comfortable with a smaller load. That said, my overnight gear fits perfectly. I thought the lack of a dedicated sleeping bag compartment would be an issue, as I'm pretty fond of that feature on my larger pack, but the bottom access zipper works just fine. I do wish the water bottle pockets were more accessible while hiking, but I've rarely seen a backpack where that's the case, so I don't fault Gregory for it. I LOVE the big hip belt pockets -- there's enough room for my iphone, map, chapstick, and some snacks.
As other reviewers have mentioned, this pack is rather contoured to the shape of a woman's back. I find this type of fit to be quite stable and comfortable, but if you're used to the airflow style of Osprey and similar packs, this will definitely be an adjustment -- your back will get sweaty! My one gripe with the fit is that the hip belt is very nearly too big for me. I'm pretty slim, about 5'7" and 120 lbs with a 26" waist, and I have the hip belt cinched as tight as possible on both sides, which leaves me no extra slack to be able to tighten the belt while I'm hiking. The extra slack hanging down from the belt, about 15" on either side, is pretty annoying as well. I would have tried the next size down, but the medium was the perfect length for my 18" torso. -
5.0 out of 5 stars. Comfortable, nice degree of structure, great storage/access designVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from Colorado on Monday, June 25, 2018The pack is very comfortable - good padding, overall balance and adjustability. The large lid, large front pocket and both side pockets allow easy access to a variety of items, eliminating the need to access the main compartment during the day. The top and bottom access to the central compartment is perfect! I will use this pack for hut traveling in Europe and long day hikes in or an overnighter in the Colorado high country.

5.0 out of 5 stars. seems excellent for the priceVerified Buyer Reviewed by ANGELA from Easter Washington on Tuesday, June 5, 2018This seems like an incredible pack for the price. I love the different pockets, the large hip pockets especially, and it seems to fit the length and curve of my back (which is a bit TOO curved, really). For reference I'm 5/8", somewhat long-waisted, and sort of "pear" shaped. My husband has an older backpack and this is SO much lighter. I also like the idea that it can squinch down to international carry-on size, I can definitely see myself using it this way. We did a global trip with travel-style flat-back backpacks and I will appreciate something that's more comfortable to wear while walking cities and train stations--for this sort of use packing cubes would be essential. No place for the laptop, but that's not really the intended use.
I ordered this and one other pack to try on and hoped for the best, as this is less than half of anything equivalent at our local outdoor store, which it would be great to support but all this stuff adds up. So far I like this backpack the best--however--
I still need to buy the rest of the stuff (sleeping bag, tent, etc), and load it up and see how it feels. -

5.0 out of 5 stars. A Fabulous Pack!Verified Buyer Reviewed by helizzza from Colorado on Saturday, June 3, 2017I am very happy with my Amber 44 backpack from Gregory. It fits me perfectly and has all the right pockets! The top flap come off for a convenient day pack and I love that you can access the main compartment from a zipper near the bottom as well as the top! I am super excited to take it to Europe this summer and on some one night backpacking trips!

5.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent mid-size packVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from Utah on Tuesday, April 4, 2017This no nonsense pack has what I need and nothing I don't. It carries a full load well with nice weight distribution. It's also nice and adjustable for small loads as you can easily tighten things up without a lot of fuss and excess dangling attachments. The rainfly is a real bonus. This is a great pack for a sweet price.

4.0 out of 5 stars. Very comfortable pack!Verified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from Holland on Tuesday, March 28, 2017I have put about 25 miles on this pack since buying it a few weeks ago; mostly 5-6 mile training hikes to get ready for a weekend outing. So far, I'm very pleased. I have about 25 lbs. in it, and once it's on, it feels like nothing. My only gripe is that there's no where handy to stash a water bottle (the side pockets are hard to get into when the pack's on.) There is a water bladder pass through, but I like bottles, so that's kind of annoying. Love the roomy pockets on the hip belt, and the two separate lid pockets.

5.0 out of 5 stars. Spacious, comfortable, versatileVerified Buyer Reviewed by Summer from New England on Wednesday, February 8, 2017My torso measures about 17 inches but I'm usually more comfortable in a larger pack, so I ordered a medium at first. It was comfortable and held the weight on my hips but I felt like it could be more stable. Also, I'm 5'4" 130 lbs and the waist belt was somewhat large at the smallest settings. I returned it for a small which fits perfectly. I packed up for a four day trip and had more than enough room. When fully loaded, cinching the compression straps effectively stabilizes the pack. It's also perfect for lesser loads because you can use the straps to reign in the extra fabric. I ordered the Gregory Amber 34 thinking the 44 would be too large for day to day uses but they looked essentially the same, with the 44 having the benefit of the added capacity when I need it. I love the smaller pockets on the lid, the hip belt pockets, and that it comes with a rain cover. Overall this pack is awesome!
