5.0 out of 5 stars. less is moreReviewed by kuhlslaw from Buffalo, NY on Wednesday, April 5, 2017this machine has been making great tasting coffee for 6 months now in my kitchen. The emphasis was always on fresh and hot, without abusing the coffee or a notion that there will be hot brown liquid in a pot waiting for you. This machine was designed for people who would insist upon the version of coffee that is and remains a treat; There is no timer, so you are going to make it when you want it. No hot plate, so no chance of aging it in the pot or reducing it to a sludge. It gets brewed with fresh hot water, that is hotter than most machines brew but not boiling, over grounds in a cone-shaped filter, to get more flavor extracted, and into a SS carafe.
If you can pre-heat the carafe then the coffee will stay hotter longer, and I suggest that you don't store the hot coffee once it's made in the machine unless you remove the filter holder first. If you don't remove one or the other (the pot or the filter,) the heat will escape through the depressed seal on the top of the carafe.
I had a leak on mine, and Bodum took care of the problem for me with great deft and care.
Bodum started selling it at $130, but the discounted price at STP makes it a great deal. I highly recommend it (btw it was never 169) -
4.0 out of 5 stars. Great coffee makerReviewed by Vlad the Impala from Missouri on Friday, February 10, 2017Disclaimer: I bought this brand new at Goodwill for $60.
This is a great unit which I would recommend, given the price I paid. Very simple operation - push one button to start it and that's it; the thermal carafe does not have a hot plate, there are no programming options, there are no brewing options. Fill the basket with grounds, fill the tank with water, push the start button.
The things about this that bother me:
The feet are suction cups...this is great as it keeps the machine from being knocked over, but I move it out from under the cabinet to fill the tank and thus have to mess with the suction cups every time. Eventually I expect they will tear or fall out but so far so good after a few months of regular use.
The water comes into contact with a lot of plastic. The tank, basket, and carafe lid are all plastic. For Bodum's retail asking price I would expect less plastic, but then again I got this at a significant discount.
Sometimes the machine is finicky when starting - if the carafe is not situated just right the start button will flash red. The same thing happens if the machine thinks the tank has no water, which mostly occurs when the tank is filled without detaching it from the machine.
**This is the worst flaw of the machine: the detachable water tank has a terrible seal. Since I bought it new, it has leaked when filled with water while detached from the machine. Either the rubber seal or the return spring is junk, but hard to tell which. The easiest solution to this is to keep the tank attached and just fill it with a pitcher - much like every other coffee maker. This is not a deal breaker for me because I only paid $60 for this and it makes great coffee.
STP's asking price is steep, but if you have the money to burn then give it a try. If you're on a budget, I would look elsewhere or just buy a Chemex.
