5.0 out of 5 stars. Great rod for the price - Casts well and is lightweightVerified Buyer Reviewed by rxflyfisher from Delaware USA on Friday, March 11, 2016I took this rod to Belize to handle small tarpon but did not get a chance to cast to any. I practiced off the dock by our lodge and the rod handled both a 10wt and 11wt line very well. As usual for products from STP, the price is right and the quality is just what I am looking for in fishing gear. If you are anything like me and not a professional, you will be very happy with this rod.

4.0 out of 5 stars. Impressive and hard to believe the performance considering the priceVerified Buyer Reviewed by FlyFisher1 from Bend OR on Tuesday, February 16, 2016Due to using this rod for a "lawn casting session", the rating is 4 stars, but 5 is likely as the performance and build quality are impressive. If blindfolded, I'm not sure I could tell it was not a rod costing 2-3 times the price. There were no quality issues with the rod I received - it is very nicely turned out. Blank was clean and straight, thread wraps tight and even with no blemishes. Alignment dots are a plus. Casting at short and long range was crisp and effortless. The 7 weight was slim and light in the hand, and well balanced with the reel (Orvis Battenkill MidArbor IV). The 7 WF F line loaded the rod properly; I did not feel a need to over or under line it in any way. I can't wait to give it a try on the John Day for late season steelhead, and fully expect to be quite pleased with its performance. My usual rod is a Sage RPL III, 25 years old, but still a great rod. This Ross feels quite similar, but is lighter in the hand. Hard to go wrong at the STP price for a back up rod if not your go to stick.

5.0 out of 5 stars. Ross Essence FC 10 wtVerified Buyer Reviewed by on a dime from Montana on Sunday, November 22, 2015I have owned an Essence FC 5 wt for several years and have been very pleased with the quality of construction and smoothness of action for a very affordable rod. I have been looking for a heavy single handed rod to pursue king salmon during travels to Alaska. Instead of spending $500 to $900 dollars on a high end rod, I'd rather get an affordable rod that would leave some money left over to buy the plane ticket to AK to actually get a chance to use it. When I saw Sierra Trading Post had these rods on closeout in a 10 wt, I jumped. I believe it will do the job just fine -stout enough to land a king but still subtle enough to nicely rollout a sink tip or weighted fly. Rod arrived in good shape, couldn't beat the price tag. Just need to find a nice reel with strong drag to make up the full package. Throw in another $75 to $100 for a nice fly line (thinking Rio Outbound Short). Looking forward to using it during future travels.

4.0 out of 5 stars. Ross Reels Essence 11-12wtReviewed by Anonymous from PA on Wednesday, April 17, 2013Took this rod out for the first time the other day and was impressed. Throwing musky flies (8+ inches) all day was no problem, even when the wind kicked up. Great deal for a rod with the backbone.

5.0 out of 5 stars. 12 Weight Slingshot!Verified Buyer Reviewed by RoboFishMan from US Northwest on Wednesday, July 25, 2012I am impressed that this (12 weight) rod's action is faster than I was expecting. More of a fast to moderate-fast blank with very little flex in bottom two rod sections. Middle of rod loads well and tip is fast and responsive. Throws an 11 weight tarpon line a mile. Probably a true 12 weight as tarpon lines are usually uplined one weight. Cork is decent. Minor finishing blems on blank do not matter to me as this is a backup rod.
- Best Uses: Blue water backup rod, Chinook in AK
- Cons: Minor blemishes on blank
- Pros: Fast action blank, Nicely finished, Strong walled
