4.0 out of 5 stars. Good old school type bootReviewed by Glen from Reno, NV on Monday, July 27, 2015I purchased these late last year to do the Tahoe Rim Trail this year. Wore them around the house, and around town, for about 20 miles over the winter. Did some 5 to 20 mile day hikes this spring to try and break them in. Anything over 10 miles produced blister PPPon both heels. Replaced the [...] insoles with Green Superfeet before doing the TRT. They had roughly 75 miles n them when I started the TRT but that wasn't enough to break them in. Did the TRT IN 9 days, averaging 19 miles a day. Blisters for the first 4 days then finally the started getting better.
Bad:
1. Stiff boot that takes a lot of patience to break in. Took probably 150 miles to break in the boots and/or my feet.
2. [...] insoles. I currently own hiking shoes or hiking boots from Soliman, Merrels, Vasque, and LA Spotiva. None came with good insoles. You would think a boot in this price range would have good insoles but, from what I have read, this is a universal problem with boots in any price range.
3. They're hot for summer use. I wouldn't say this is necessarily a desoig defect as they are likely designed for colder weather.
Good:
1. Ankle support is excellent. This is the number one reason I purchased them. Would love to be able to hike in low tops but my ankles'seem to twist pretty easily, even without a pack. This was never a issue with these boots. My pack weight started at 60lbs and ended at around 35lbs. Rock solid ankle support.
2. Durability. OK, this is the benefit of breaking in a stiff boot. Once broken in, these should last for a very long time. After finishing the TRT, I washed, dried, and applied a couple coats of mink oil. The boots have minor wear on the Vibram soles but the uppers look like they just came out of the box. I was amazed.
3. They look as tough as they are. I know, who cares about looks but it is a plus as long as function isn't negatively impacted.
4. For me, sizing was true.
In the end, I am not sure if I would purchase another pair but hat isn't bad as I have never purchased the same model of boots twice. Guess I am always looking for something better. Also, given how they are holding up, I may not need to purchase another pair of heavy duty backpacking boots for years to come. One thing is for certain, I love STP and now purchase nearly all my backpacking supplies from them. -
4.0 out of 5 stars. almost goodVerified Buyer Reviewed by topograf from Colorado on Thursday, March 26, 2015I had hoped these boots would work. They looked well made. I initially tried them with the standard insole and heavy hiking socks. They seemed loose. So I removed the standard insoles (this should be the first thing you do) and installed some green superfeet. Even with the heavy socks they still seemed loose. My conclusion is that these boots are high volume. I have narrow feet with low-mid volume. The length of these boots seemed true to size. If you have high volume feet these may work for you. I had to return them.

3.0 out of 5 stars. great boot - cheap hardwareReviewed by NC Mountain Boy from Western NC on Tuesday, March 17, 2015Bought these for winter, wore about 30 times before one of the speed-laces broke off. Not good for a boot in this price range. Otherwise fit and comfort great.

4.0 out of 5 stars. great bootVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from VA on Saturday, February 28, 2015I ordered two styles of the JF boots. I liked this one also but returned it after wearing it around the house. It is stiff and will take some break in time.
I kept the All Terrain model which was a bit softer and still a good hiking boot. Went 3-4 miles today and they did great. -
1.0 out of 5 stars. True to reviewVerified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from Maine on Tuesday, February 17, 2015Very stiff I don't know how you would ever soften them up, good luck trying.

4.0 out of 5 stars. Solid boots with classy looks!Reviewed by Rai from Tennessee on Saturday, December 20, 2014Its definitely a solid boot made to last long long time. That said it would take quite a break in. The insoles is rather minimal and hard which could be better. Nevertheless it looks classy and feels like a tank!

5.0 out of 5 stars. solidly made bootsVerified Buyer Reviewed by Runs With Scissors from S.E. Michigan on Thursday, November 20, 2014These boots seem to be made "old school" - tough, stiff leather that you need to break in over a period of time. They fit great. Plenty of room in the toe box. Great ankle support. Nice lookin'. But ya gotta faith that they will eventually soften up a bit & conform to your feet. I prefer that over getting a pair of boots that require no break-in period but breakdown within the year.
They are true to size. I got size U.S. 9.5 (U.K. 8.5, euro 42.5) and they fit perfectly.
I have flat, low-volume feet with bunions (think "flippers"). And these boots seem made for me. -
