5.0 out of 5 stars. THE coat for northern winter
Reviewed by Anonymous from northern state on Tuesday, December 2, 2014
I live in Michigan and recently gave this coat as a gift to my significant other, who moved here from the south. This coat is extremely well made. It fits true to size. My SO has long arm and torso and I knew he would have no trouble with this brand as it is German in design. The pockets are all at the right places. Two inner cords inside zip chest pockets can be tightened to cinch the waist; the hip band can be worn snapped or opened, it provides additional protection against wind if you bend your back/wait for any reason. The hood is a perfect depth and the faux fur will be extremely useful against snow. Our only minor complaint is the use of velcro on the front patch pockets, around the sleeves and the front zipper; I do not personally care for velcro as they lose function over time; Aside from that, this is as close to a perfect coat as you can get for sub-zero (Fahrenheit) climate. It compares well with my $700 canada goose parka. I was fortunate to purchase it with a 40% discount code. This is the kind of product that Sierra trading post is known for.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great coat

The warmest coat I have ever owned. Outstanding quality. They say this parka was used for polar expeditions, and it is totally credible. I am 5'10, 200 lb, wear 42R sport coat. This parka (size L) fits on top of a 42R sport coat or a heavy sweater easily and comfortably.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. best parka ever

I've been buying winter parkas since 1972 when I moved to Western New York. For a years I bought the best that LL Bean had to offer. Then about 19 years ago I began ordering them from Sierra -- mostly some excellent Canada Goose parkas. I live in Boston now and the city is experiencing its worsti winter in history. My Canada Goose parka was keeping me warm enough, but it had too few pockets for someone who hikes with his dogs -- not enough pockets for leashes and heavy mittens. I needed something better so I ordered the Jack Wolfskin Polar Ice Down Parka simply because it looked like it had a sufficient number of pockets. And it does. I no longer have to shuffle around, fearing that I might lose my keys, my mittens or my leashes. So I'm no longer a nervous wreck. But the parka itself is incredible.Granted, it's on the heavy side, but that's because it is filled with so much insulating down. And it is incredibly warm; I can hike with the dogs in temperatures below zero with the wind blowing at 30 miles per hour or more. And I feel as it my body from just above the knees to the top of my head is walking around at room temperature. This coat would be a bargain at list price, which is about $900. At STP's price, I would say that it's probably the best bargain in a piece of clothing that I've ever had. If I ever go above the Arctic circle, this is the coat I want to be wearing.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. XT review

This jacket is extremely well made, with quality of materials that rivals Canada Goose. Extremely warm and comfortable once you put it on. The hood is large, but modular to make it tighten up. The coat runs LARGE, the L says its 40-42 chest size, but in reality its for a person who wears a 44-46. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I didn't like the quality of the faux fur. But it's removable so if you don't care about fur and plan to take it off regardless, and if you're the right size (2 inches larger than specified) then this coat is perfect. Also watch the weight to make sure you're comfortable lugging a 6 pound coat around.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent winter coat

Like the previous reviewer stated, this jacket is easily on the level of Canada Goose (have 3). The workmanship is top notch and it has a number of useful features such as chest level pockets / side zips for pant pocket access and a down filled (!) powder skirt. Last but least, the exterior is a cotton blend, so it is much softer than typical nylon coats. The only downside is that is rarely gets cold enough to wear it.
