5.0 out of 5 stars. Simple, rugged daypackReviewed by jboylermaker from upstate ny on Saturday, January 10, 2015I purchased this pack to use for my daily commute and for general outdoor use. Messenger bags, even with light loads, were beginning to aggravate my neck and shoulders, and I worried about the long-term effects. I load this pack with ~10lbs, including water, lunch, books, and other stuff I might need on a daily basis, and am happy and comfortable. I would say that ~15lbs would be the maximum I would carry in a pack of this design, so be sure of your use before purchasing.
Internal organization is limited to a zipper in the top flap (which isn't shown in any of the pictures), with one large pouch making up the main body. Zippered accessory packs can be purchased to offer more options, including ones that snap onto the back panel (you can see these in the provided pictures). I was concerned that these snaps might chafe my back, but have had no issues to date. I do recommend adding a foam pad to rest along the back panel to provide some rigidity and to prevent items with hard edges (water bottles, books, etc.) from digging into your back.
One concern I have is the integrity of the wool over extended use. My experience with this manufacturer has proven that the canvas, brass, and leather elements of the bag are as rugged as can be. The wool, on the other hand, is more of a question mark. The wool on the top flap is backed by waxed canvas with the aforementioned zipper, but the wool on the top half of the bag's main body is not. I have a wool backpack that has lasted for several years, so this concern may not be warranted, but something worth considering. The wool will also be less water resistant than the canvas, so don't expect this bag to protect your electronics in a downpour, but the resistance of the wool to the elements will pleasantly surprise those with limited experience to wool's utility as a fabric in outdoor gear & clothing.
Overall, this bag meets my expectations. The use of wool, waxed canvas, leather, and brass is aesthetically pleasing while still remaining practical for daily use - bonus points for being made in the US. If you're looking for a bag to carry a laptop, iPad, gym clothing, and other items, this may not meet your needs. If you want a simple, rugged bag to comfortably carry a few items while looking like you may hop over the back fence and travel down country roads, this is the bag for you.
