About Frye James Lug Wingtip Leather Boots (For Men)

Closeouts. One customer calls them "old school cool", and that pretty much nails it for us. Frye's James Wingtip boots are a superb blend of fancy brogueing and practical rubber lugs -- comfortable, stylish, and made to last for many seasons of wear.

5.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent, durable, long break-in time

Frye makes a good pair of boots, this is a fact. I have a friend who swears by them as her main pair of non-rain footwear. Up until I got these boots, I...was more tepid about the brand, being a discerning near-daily boot-wearer (Wolverine 1000 and J&M are my usual jam, and I lean a little dressy).

I stand corrected.

Finish-wise, these boots are solid gold: look great with nice jeans, and dress up to more creative suit-wearing levels if you're so inclined. They take alright to rain, although you'll want to dry off the leather (pretty, mid-brown pebbled leather, ooh) when you get back inside. They have a noticeable amount of rise (I feel really tall in these), but don't have a clunky platform feel. The construction is very solid for the price - no sketchy glued-on parts, nice stitching, good lining, cool gum-color soles. Really the only fault I can find is that the serrated edges on the brogue are just a little imperfect. I'd maybe worry about this were I buying a more expensive boot, at full-price.

Fit-wise, these boots are also great. Frye's sizing corresponds to real-world sizes! No more ordering down as with J&M's, no wondering about foot width or looking like a clown as with J.D.Fisk boots. HOWEVER, snug sizes and very solid construction come at a price, and that price is break in. For the first week, you're going to want to roll your socks such that there's two layers between your lower calf and the top of the boot, or you're going to be in some amount of pain until the ankle loosens up to work with your foot.

So yeah, buy these, unless you don't like looking good.

  • 1.0 out of 5 stars. They broke.

These were an utter disappointment; I was really sad. The good - They look amazing and they're really comfortable. I usually wear an 11, occasionally an 11.5. Got these in 11 and they felt snug but in a "yeah, these will get broken in and be amazing" way. I got lots of compliments on them.

The bad: After wearing them maybe a dozen times, the top of the heel cup tore. If you look at the detail picture of the boots, you can see decorative perforations along the curve of the heel cup. There's nothing behind those perforations and the leather failed quickly.

Sierra Trading Post was great about the return. I guess I might have gotten a defective pair- maybe someone cut the upper wrong - but it seemed like a design flaw. Shame, too. They were nice boots otherwise.

Got a pair of Wolverine 1000 Miles to replace them; hope they'll last longer.
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Don't be fooled by the "bench crafted" nonsense

For anyone who knows what a true quality shoe is, these fall very short of the mark. The leather is cheap and stiff, and the gluing and stitching are shoddy. Even at a highly discounted price, they aren't worth it. I'm returning mine immediately and saving up for some Trickers or Allen Edmonds.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Nice pair of Boots

Returned the first pair for quality issues. An eyelet grommet came loose while lacing up the first time. The right shank would pop with every step. Quick and easy return and a new pair was shipped the next day. They require a bit of break in, but are comfortable and stable boots. I've worn them two days now. I'll be interested to see what longevity they have. I'd recommend them at this point.
