You will need to buy the bra pad inserts. They are missing and definitely needed if you intend to wear these without a bra. The insert hole does exist. Happy I got all three. Would highly recommend!

For me (38DD) if I place the band along my rib cage then it pulls the shirt down to be too shallow. I think a person would have to be fairly small or firm for it to work without a bra. I wear it layered over a pull over type sports bra for times when I only need light support.

This top is very nice Athleta fabric but the cut is not great. It's long and very straight. There's a compression shelf bra which adds to the straight shape. For the right body type the price is certainly right. We ordered the pink/purple and blue colors– I preferred the pink but would have kept them both if they had worked.
