5.0 out of 5 stars. Had to puff up my favorite hats ratings

Can't believe this is on clearance rather than sold out - well the picture of it stinks, yeah. I bought like 10 hats last year when the high was like 9 degrees all February. I bought 3 OR hats and really liked this the best. The Frostline is the warmest but it's a bit dorky and that's another review. This looks like a beany on your head NOT a hot air balloon as in the picture. And it's the best beany I've had as it is wind proof and pretty much waterproof (I've only worn it in snow and no seepage even when it was melting. Very comfortable on the head. Wool beanies always make my scalp itch and the constant squeeze is a bit much. With the wool only at the bottom of this hat it's like ear warmers connected to a nylon hat, which suits me very well. And if it gets really cold a Smartwool beanie fit under it just like layering under a light shell. With the primaloft insulation I only did that when sitting in zero degrees weather for hours, but it worked. Anyway, great hat and at this price put it in the car for emergencies like I did with the 3rd one I bought. Ohhh, It even fit under my bike helmet for real cold days and was very nice.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Works great

This hat works extremely well in cold conditions. I have worn it in below zero (F) temps and up to 20F in very windy conditions. The hat completely blocks the wind and kept my head very warm. I had to use a balaclava in the below zero temps to protect my neck and face. I did sweat with the combination, but my head stayed warm even though sweaty. I have not washed the hat yet, so I'm not sure how it will hold up, but I'm extremely happy with the performance so far.

Way better than I expected. Fit is cute. Primaloft lining inside. So warm and windproof. Great for shipwork, so great for any activity out in the cold. Love this hat.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Not all that funny looking

Agree with reviewers who say it looks better on than in picture. Fits a little tight under ski helmet but worth a try, as it is warm and amply covers the ears on my fat head.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Perfect Hat for Wet Weather

I'm not sure what size hat I wear and I was hesitant to buy a large, but it fits perfectly. The water-repellent beanie will stay dry over a knit hat, and the merino wool band will keep my ears warm.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
