The waist is high and of a stretchy elasticized material. It's not tight (and no belt loops available) but seems like the pants will stay up regardless. Very flattering fit which is a surprise considering they don't look so appealing out of the packaging. These should keep me toasty warm!

I finally found them in the Bonfire Taylor Snow Pants. They definitely are "high waist" going above my natural waistline, but they fit perfectly in the hips and when I sit down, my lower back is still covered. I bought these in the late spring, so have not been able to try them out on the slopes until next winter season, but I am already impressed with the interior insulation and the fit. I am 5' 2" and weigh 105 lbs. The size S is a perfect fit. I will wear them as is on the slopes and if I don't like the high waist in the front, I will have a seamstress lower it by one button, but I am going to leave the back section intact.
