He tells me it works perfectly for allspice, star anise, cloves, and the other whole spices he uses in his creations. It's deep enough to keep the spices IN the bowl (versus on the floor for you to discover in your bare feet!!) and it's easy to clean. A great addition to any serious cook's pantry. Great value at STP pricing - couldn't believe how inexpensive it was - thanks!

However, it really isn't up to some more serious jobs so when I saw this offered I grabbed it. I have not yet used it (sorry) but I have no doubt it will stand up to any spice or dried foo job I have. I also think it is very attractive. It has some real heft to it and is attractive.

The darker color works well for the white and yellow pills. The smaller diameter of this particular mortar also works well for the relatively small size of the pills.

When I saw this set at such a reasonable price, I jumped on it. I didn't pay close attention to the description regarding size so when it arrived and it was of such substantial size/weight, I was more than pleasantly surprised. There were no chips, cracks or imperfections - rare for marble. It's so lovely, I use it as an accent piece rather than storing it until I need it.
