They are comfortable and would be able to accommodate any orthotic insoles you might need to place it them. However, they can be a bit unsteady on uneven surfaces and it would be easy to twist your ankle unless you react quickly.

While they do have an open back there is enough of a lip that I don't feel like my feet will slip out easily. The only thing to note is that they seem to be sized smaller than usual. I have worn other Sanitas, Danskos, and other European-sized shoes and have consistently worn a 40. The 40 in the Nikolette was too small as my heel was over the lip, but size 41 fits perfectly.
