5.0 out of 5 stars. Well made reel

I got a great price on this reel with the DealFlyer discount. This is a US made, fully machined reel from a company with a great reputation. The drag is smooth and strong. I teamed this reel with a 9 weight Ross RX rod I also purchased from STP. This will be my "go to" outfit for inshore fishing. I don't think you can find a better reel at this price.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Very nice reel!

I've always been a Ross Reel guy but decided to give this one a try because of the low cost and high reviews. The minute I pulled it out of the box I was impressed. You can usually tell a lot about a reels quality just by the way it feels in hand. This reel feels solid and well made. Drag feels smooth and adjustments are smooth and easy to make. I will definitely give Lamson/waterworks reels serious consideration in the future. Can't wait to give it a real Michigan winter steelhead workout this season!

You definitely get your money's worth with this reel. Though the drag can be a bit difficult to adjust in the middle of a fight, the rest of its qualities outweigh this minor inconvenience.

I've got 3 Lamson reels and each one has been great so far. This Guru 3.5 is the heaviest of the lot, but that may not be a bad thing. The weight on the Guru 3.5 is about average or slightly heavier than many other machined reels in this class which makes it good for balancing rods that have a higher swing weight. It also feels more rugged vs. other Lamsons that seem light as air.

Most importantly, this reel has the standard Lamson conical sealed drag which makes it almost foolproof. We'll see if it holds up in salt water.

Lamson reels have always been great! The Guru 3.5 is perfect for spring & fall steelhead around the Great Lakes!

About Lamson

When Lamson designers and engineers set about to revolutionize fly fishing reels, they threw out the existing assumptions and started from scratch. Beginning with a blank piece of paper, they re-designed, re-thought, and re-tooled fly fishing reels to achieve a crucial balance and optimal performance. Lighter materials like titanium and polymers took the place of steel, wood and cork. Simplified designs meant fewer components, lighter weight and amazing longevity. Along the way, Lamson shaved so much weight from the reel that larger, better-retrieving arbors were incorporated into the design. They topped off their list of impressive advancements with a high performance, conical polymer alloy drag system. The result? Precisely machined fly fishing reels constructed from space age materials that are so light, they seem to defy gravity.
