About Amana

Established in the 1850s by a group of German immigrants in east-central Iowa, the Amana Colonies remained an almost entirely self-sufficient community for eighty years. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the people of these colonies sustained a thriving economy via farming and craftsmanship, including the production of fine textile products and furniture.
