5.0 out of 5 stars. So far,so good

I've purchased Columbia shoes in the past and have liked them both for fit and function. I haven't taken these on the trail yet, but expect good things from them. The mesh in the upper lets a lot of light through, so these are probably best as warm-weather shoes.

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. A little too lightweight

Recently bought 3 different brands of low hikers at great prices (Merrell and Hi-Tec were the other two) . This was the lowest priced. I'd call it more of a beefier tennis shoe than something for the trail. Will be nice for around town and on city trails or biking. The foot bed has more flex than the others I received. You will want to replace the insole if you need more instep support. Width was narrower than the other brands if that is a consideration for deciding, but sizing was good otherwise. With all the venting it appears promising for hot weather. I am curious though to see how durable it is.

Not substantial enough for hiking shoe for my liking. Too much feeling of surface contact and not enough cushion. Top part too flexible and lacking in supportive strength. Perhaps a good walking shoe over soft surface like grass, etc.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. A well-made, lightweight hiker

These hiking shoes are almost as light as my running shoes, which should prove a significant advantage during a long day's slogging. The sole is very firm and effective at insulating the foot from irregularities in the terrain. One complaint: the insole seems a bit thin and lacking in padding or support, and there is very little arch support; I plan to swap in a set of athletic shoe insoles with a gel arch to try to counteract this deficiency. Other than this, the shoes, like every Columbia product I have ever owned, are very well constructed. Quality suede and nylon mesh, very well cut and stitched are the order of the day. The true test will be their comfort on long hikes and their long-term durability--both of which I am unable to judge at this point, but I am optimistic that I am at least starting with a well-built shoe made of quality materials. Sizing was spot on with my normal street shoe size, and there are no tight or cramped areas in the shoe. The toe box is especially well shaped and non-confining. In short, this is a very well made hiking shoe that should serve well for day-walking on improved trails, sidewalks, or hardpack; these would most certainly not be intended for any hiking over steep grades or in situations where ankle support was needed. Best of all, with STP's ridiculously discounted price and free shipping, I picked these shoes up for a song.
