Also, they are a little stiff and do not breathe as well as I hoped, which almost requires a sock for the most comfortable wear, however with the shoe design they look silly with a standard sock.

I didn't realize they were putting more stylish shoes into the mix. Have always thought of Merrell shoes as hiking / walking shoes and my feet always felt great after a few miles. Shoes are stiff at first causing some irritation but do break in, recommend wearing a light stocking or sock with them
Very light on the feet, almost like a sandal, but gives more support for foot
