I bought my usual size, and they were snug enough that they tended to bunch rather than hang smoothly as in the photo. I'd be constantly pulling them down. So perhaps try one size up, unless you like the young teen tight fit look. I like that there are no pockets and so, had they fit smoothly, it would, indeed be a smooth look.
