Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. Truly effective

This jacket is a truly amazing windblock. Incredibly lightweight and soft-- you'd never think it could keep the wind out so effectively! I bought the orange, which is perhaps a little brighter than the image appeared on my screen and runs slightly toward the red end of orange rather than the yellow end. It's a decently visible color for cycling, but is certainly not the high-vis safety orange.

About fit: This is, as others have noted, a close-fitting item. I'm 5'4", 125 lbs with about a 37" chest. I bought the medium and it fits well and is flattering, but it would be a little tight with anything heavier than a wool shirt underneath. That being said, this jacket could also go under a fleece, I think, as a windblock layer. It's brushed on the inside, so it's soft against your skin. Sleeves run a little long, which is nice on a bike, and the cuffs are pretty tight, so don't plan to be able to push up the sleeves.

When I'm riding, I do work up a bit of a sweat inside the jacket, but it doesn't seem to get especially clammy or cold and it dries right out again afterward.

And yes, it has only one pocket, which is really just for an mp3 player. Another might be nice, but would add bulk to what is really a minimalist, highly technical piece of gear.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Cool, comfortable, windblocker!

I love this fabric. Soft inside, durable outside.
I am 5'-0", 110 lbs, and wear a size S. Length is perfect.
Compared to my older MH Transition half-zip which I got 8 years ago and still wear daily, the sleeves are two inches longer and then on top of that there is the thumb catch cuff. So my hands stay warmer when hanging out at the base of the cliff.
The pale color on the cuff isn't great for stains, dirt, etc. It has already turned black from handling gear.
I found the end of the sleeve is a bit narrow for my widened climber's hands. But all the better to keep the wind out.
Wore this to ride along the windy river and it did it's job perfectly.

It's too bad that this product line has been discontinued. I own several transition shirts/jackets, and use them for everything (cycling,running,skiing,etc)...They are super breathable, completely windproof,do not hold much moisture ,and dry really fast. Great for back country skiing under a light weight primaloft jacket. Stoked to be able to score the last available. Me, 5'6",140lb male and purchased womens xl.

I love Mountain Hardwear and was not disappointed by this. I plan to use it for fall bike rides and layering for skiing. I normally wear a women's small (size 6) but in Mountain Hardware the medium fits perfectly (as always!).

About Mountain Hardwear

Starting back in 1993, a small group of outdoor industry mavericks broke away from the pack to follow a less-traveled path. From the very beginning, the primary goal of Mountain Hardwear was to create an outdoor gear brand with a sharp focus on technology-driven design, superior performance and hardcore reliability. The result of this function-first mentality has been an array of incredible Mountain Hardwear jackets, clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories. Today, after more than two decades of industry-leading innovation, Mountain Hardwear continues to set new benchmarks for dependability in the toughest conditions on the planet.
