It was purchased because it stated it has an elastic waist. It has a very narrow belt that is pulled through an opening around the waist and clamps closed. My husband had some trouble making the belt stay tightened. The elastic didn't make the waist tight enough. The pants are made beautiful and they are comfortable (says he). I purchased a regular width elastic belt to hold the pants up but the loops on the pants are very small and I will have to look for one that is narrower.
