The leather is very soft. I would not buy them to use without the fleece insert because they are too big - at least on me - when you take the fleece out (and I have size 13 fingers).

The outer glove is fairly thin, so I do not know about the life of the gloves, but I love to wear them as long as they last. And who knows, it might be a long time.
