No they are not that narrow on the lower leg, unless you have very large calves. Well made, they don't pill or get fuzzy. I have washed and dried these many times. Will get another pair. I have worn them several times for yoga, pickle ball, and XC skiing on "spring skiing" weather days and they still look brand new... no pilling. They will also work for bike rides on cooler days because they are narrow near the ankle. I am 5 feet, 97 pounds; ordered the XS, they are a bit long but they still work for me.
