The back pack is lightweight and is ready for day and overnight hikes. It works well for traveling too.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Might be Going Back--Updated

Just an update of the previous review: I finally figured out how to keep gear in the helmet pocket if it is not a helmet--the pack has to be full. Then the clips on the pocket will pull tight enough to trap gear. Or, since I did not have enough to fill the pack (and it is roomy), I tightened the bottom compression strap (running it across the back) to essentially take away the bottom quarter of storage space. That seems to work.

That picks the rating up to 4 stars, but not 5 because the back is not designed for hot weather--it sits right on your back. It has some foam with mesh over it in an apparent attempt to create some cooling, but not enough of an effect. This pack would work great fall through spring, but not in summer.
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Might be Going Back

I ordered this to use walking the Camino de Santiago (think of it as dayhiking for a month, staying in hostels everynight). The pack is very lightweight and generally, I like it.. I have two concerns, however, they may result in it going back: 1) unlike other Deuter packs that pride themselves on keeping your back cool, I think this pack would be hot--it sits in full contact with your entire back; 2) the shove-it pocket is designed for helmets, and pretty much only helmets. I had hoped to keep rain gear in the pocket, but it is so open near the top that I think they would fall out if I was not very careful when putting on or taking off the pack. In short--I think this pack is great for climbing, but not so great (not horrible either, but not great) for other uses. I've ordered the Deuter Futura 28 and Osprey Stratos 24 to see if they will be worth the additional half pound.
