The essential feature, to me, on any vest, is a zip shut chest pocket which is sometimes called a Napoleon pocket. The hand pockets are, of course, essential also, but so too is the third pocket on the chest. It is where I put my wallet zipped shut until needed. The side pockets are fine for keys, change and my phone, but I just feel safer with my wallet separate.
