It's a crocheted lace, as shown in the photo, and has some texture. The rest of the sweater is a light knit fabric, like good quality t-shirt material. I tried wearing it with a tank top with thin straps, so that some skin would show through the lace back, and the lace was a little bit itchy against the skin, but not too bad. It was not warm, since my back was open to the air through the lace vents. Will be great for hot summer weather. It's elegant, and the front has a nice drape. I ordered a second one of these, I liked it so much -- and I didn't want to accidentally stain my only one (it's white).

I'm glad I took a chance because it fit me perfectly and is just what I needed to layer over tank dresses in the summer to keep the AC chill off my shoulders. The lacy back detail is very cute.
