Alligator clip is much more reliable than a pin attachment. After losing several fly boxes and other items from my fly vest, I now have a retractor on all my fly boxes. Normally a 5 star but the monogram chip fell off all six that I purchased. This gave me some hesitation on the quality of this batch. I have used them on six days of fishing without any trouble
