In waves and surf, they stay put reasonably well for bottoms without a draw string. The strings on the side actually pull the front and back closer together so you can adjust how tightly they fit. On my 38" hips, the size medium fits well but is most comfortable with about a 1" gap on the sides (which looks surprisingly good). I got the Moonrock color to mix and match with multicolored tops - it goes with just about everything.

However, I thought the pink version would be pink in front, with a black waistband, and maybe a black back. It's pink all over, with a dark brown waistband, and red strings.
