5.0 out of 5 stars. Black Featherstone = smooth leather that will require extra care + no speed laces
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Gloria from Southern California on Saturday, June 30, 2018
Absolutely beautiful boots. I ordered these in the black, which are marked as style #9014. According to the manufacturer's website, this type of leather (black featherstone leather) is a smooth finish that is used on Red Wing's dressier boots and requires a bit more care to maintain. They suggest boot cream rather than the boot oil that I have already purchased for my husband's boots. In fact, you can type in whichever RW style # you own and the website will give you specific recommendations for care. I know many people have their favorite product, but since I am new to this brand I thought I would follow RW's suggestions to keep these [expensive] boots looking nice.
I was so happy to find RW at STPs great prices. Initially I was worried about purchasing seconds, but I have now bought quite a few pairs for different family members and have yet to be disappointed. As a woman, I really like the looks of the shoes and boots in the heritage line and think they will work out great for work where I am on my feet for 12-14 hours/day. I don't need a true workbook, but I do want something solidly constructed and built to last. Sadly, I have a high instep and a relatively wide foot which makes buying any footwear other than athletic shoes a giant hassle. Luckily, I wear a large enough size in women's shoes that I can switch to men's sizing! Of course normally, I wouldn't consider that lucky at all...
Anyway, I typically wear a size 9.5 or 10 so I have narrowed down my choices in RW men's boots to 7.5 or 8 depending on the style. Apparently, different lasts are used for the various styles, so the fit will not be the same straight across the board. So far, of the styles I have tried, the Rovers seem to have the loosest fit (I actually take a size 7 in these + they don't feel as narrow as the others). The Beckman, IR and Blacksmith all have a similar fit (as expected since they are based on the same last) but these feel a bit tighter than the other two. I have learned a lot from reading all of the reviews here and on the RW website (plus the product information, naturally).
In this style, a size 8 is okay width-wise, but a bit too long; 7.5 is still a bit longer than I would like, but I don't think I would be able to fit into a size 7 as they are quite narrow and also because of the construction of the tongue--it is a bit of a fight to get these on. At first, I found them almost intolerably tight across the foot at the level of the first eyelet, but there is plenty of room for toe wiggle and the ankle was no problem at all. I was only able to wear them for a couple of hours on the first day, before my feet started developing cramps, but every day I keep them on for a while longer and do a bit more and they are gradually loosening up. I am definitely not ready to wear them to work yet. I know they will get there, though--based on my experience with other boots/shoes over the years, I would say two or three weeks of wearing at home before a full day at work--and then they will last for years...
These are a great deal (regular $350.00 so a savings of $200.00!) and I would not hesitate to purchase again or to recommend to others. In fact, I already have my eye on the Black Cherry. Some people may not like the lack of hooks for speed lacing, but it really only takes an extra minute or two so not a problem for me. I know there is some flaw that delegated these to the factory seconds pile, but I have no idea what it might be. The leather and stitching look perfect to me. If I had paid the regular price, I would have nothing to complain about.

This is my second pair. The Beckman is no longer normally sold in the US, but I have a pair that is a few years old, and when these came up I jumped at getting a second pair. My 2-year old black ones have 100s of miles on them of daily dress wear. I wear them 3 to 4 days a week. Order 1/2 size down from regular dress shoes if you want to wear with a light sock, and they will take 100 miles of wear to break in. I wanted Cherry, but it wasn't available in my size, so I went with brown. I'm going to darken them up with a darker polish. The new ones will go into regular rotation, but for more casual use than my black pair.

I brought these after picking up and loving a pair of iron rangers a few years ago. They arrived in the factory box (which looked like just came off the shelf). The boots were in new condition as far as I could tell and no question they were the real thing. Although I ordered the same size as the iron rangers these fit differently although they were both in the Heritage line of boots. The issue is the Beckman’s are more difficult to get on my feet. I noticed the tongue in the Beckman was fastened to the sides of the boot below the second eyelet from the top which makes the area to get my foot through much smaller. By comparison, the iron rangers are fastened below the third eyelet from the top which allows my foot to pass through easily. I wonder if this is a manufacturing defect which makes them “factory 2nds”. In any event, I will work it out and still recommend the boots as a great value. I will just have to be more deliberate in breaking them in.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Quality, Style, & Sierra Value!

As an owner of Red Wing Iron Rangers I was already sold on the quality and construction of the Red Wing Heritage “USA built” boots. I accidentally stumbled onto the fact that Sierra was selling a variety of Red Wing Boots. These are seconds but priced accordingly, and the Beckman boots which have been discontinued by Red Wing are in my opinion one of their most classic styles and the finished leather works well with both jeans and khakis.

These boots are noticeably more durable in build than my Iron Rangers, which are excellent boots. By comparison the Beckmann is a much stiffer boot with a leather midsole and Goodyear welt construction. The Brick Settler leather is very thick and stiff compared to the Iron Rangers Harness leather. This means longer break in and less comfort up front until the boot is loosened up a bit and forms to fit your foot. The tongues of these boots are sewn high To the sides of the uppers so getting them on is best accomplished with a shoe horn. Long term this boot is going to last as long as it’s cared for.

Overall I couldn’t be happier with my purchase and glad I made the purchase!!
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Super Nice Boots!

I have been eyeballing these boots for sometime now and decided to pull the trigger. They are not cheap even with the STP discounted price, but Red Wing boots are as good as they get and this is actually a great price on these high end USA made boots. The boots I received are beautiful and the dark cherry red leather is perfect. The only imperfection I could find that made these factory 2nds was a very small nick in the leather insole which is unnoticeable unless you are looking at the boot up close. I am an 8.5D size all day long, and ordered a half size down and the fit is perfect. I have worn them around the house for a few days to break them in and so far no issues or pain as some have described. If you are a boot junkie like me, treat yourself to a these Red Wing beauties!

About Red Wing

With a heritage dating back to 1905, Red Wing Shoes are legendary as an American success story. One Red Wing shoe style was standard GI-issue for WWI soldiers, and after emerging successfully from the Great Depression and the Second World War, the Red Wing brand name became synonymous with reliable, comfortable leather shoes and boots. Norman Rockwell, the artist famous for Americana artwork, even created a series of drawings for Red Wing Shoes. In the 1970s, Red Wing Shoes spread to Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe, offering its popular line of leather work boots and shoes. Red Wing has broadened its scope to offer everything from casual leather lace-up shoes and loafers to rugged work boots to thong sandals. Today, Red Wing runs three production facilities employing hundreds of expert craftsmen, but still makes each pair of oxfords, loafers, work boots and athletic shoes by hand.
