5.0 out of 5 stars. Light in weight, Heavy in warmth

This is my favorite jacket and the second time I'' buying it after wearing one for two years previously. What I like the most about it is that you can pack it into a small sized stuff sack and throw it in the backpack. The hood is perfectly sized and can be draw stringed to cover your head fully. The skirt also has a draw string allowing the jacket to completely close off.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent down puffy!

Full featured and most important...very warm. It's not simply the 700 down fill, it's the quantity of fill that makes this a toasty warm jacket. It also has adjustable wrists (which work great!) and a drawstring pull for the hood, which most of the other jackets I looked at did not have. If you zip it all the way up the hood generally stays in place. However, if you want that extra protection from the elements this jacket provides for it. Finally, the jacket is long enough to cover your butt, but not so long that it makes it hard to walk, ski, etc. So it doesn't just keep your torso warm!

Great price and great service from Sierra Trading. Highly recommend!!!
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Good at what it's supposed to do

I own a Montane featherlite down jacket, and was looking for something warmer that I could use as an outer layer at night or early morning in the mountains, and yet light enough that I wouldn't mind carrying it up in my backpack. The Marmot Guides hoody was a nice compromise for the price. I chatted with a Marmot tech rep, trying to decide between the Ama Dablam and the Guides. She told me that the Ama Dablam had 125g of 800 FP down, while the Guides had 195g of 700 FP down. So the Guides was somewhat heavier, but also warmer and more durable. Given that I wanted an outer layer, I went with the Guides.

The Guides hoody is not warm enough to replace a down parka on 0F days, but I'm comfortable wearing it as an outer layer on 20F days. I haven't had to test the water resistance, but snow, even wet snow, seems to slide off without wetting anything. The hood is down filled and warm, and a big upgrade from the Montane, which didn't have a hood. The hand warmer pockets are fleece lined and really comfortable. I usually wear a size M for most brands, and a size M of this one fit me perfectly.

One thing to keep in mind is that the chin on this thing is quite high, my zipper ends just below my nose. I like that, because it blocks the wind. But if you are more comfortable with the zipper ending below your chin, then this might be uncomfortable for you.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Fantastic jacket, just not what I needed.

Giving 5 stars because I see no reason to give it less. I ordered this as I needed a warm down jacket for the Idaho winter. When I received the jacket I was immediately impressed with the quality. I loved the adjustable wrists (seriously, so nice) and the zipper felt top notch. Sturdy material, plenty of quality insulation in all the right places. Great hood. This is a WARM jacket. I am 5’11”, 180 lbs. with athletic build and the large fit me okay. I probably should have gone down to a medium though. Unfortunately I ended up returning the jacket only because I needed a lighter-weight jacket. Even in a medium, this jacket would still have been on the puffier side, which is fine! It’s just not what I was looking for. I ended up buying a medium Mountain Hardwear Dynotherm. That being said, if you’re looking for a well built, thick, warm to the max jacket, this is it. The instant that I can justify it, will probably end up buying it again. Kinda miss it already...

I love the feel of this jacket. With the 700 fill down I'm never cold, one of the features I like the best is the fleece lined pockets, they keep my hands nice and toasty. I love just about everything about this jacket except the color. The lime green color is so bright it hurts my eyes. One thing is for sure, you will never be lost on the slopes when wearing this jacket.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Exceeds expectations

Warm, stylish and lightweight, this jacket is perfect for blustery cold weather. The hood makes the jacket superior both to jackets with and without hoods. The hood can be drawn to protect exposed parts of the face from wind. I used it recently in -4 F temperature with 50MPH gusts for a 30 minute walk and the down jacket kept my head, face and upper body completely warm. Now, if only I could find gloves to match

About Marmot

Conceived in a university dorm room by a pair of climbing buddies, Marmot Mountain Works first opened its doors in the spring of 1974 in Grand Junction, Colorado. At the time, the base of operations was a 100-year-old stone building. That same year, the first Marmot down jacket was produced specifically for an action flick called “The Eiger Sanction,” starring legendary actor Clint Eastwood. In the four decades since, Marmot has continued to engineer reliable gear that exceeds the expectations of outdoor athletes. Today, Marmot tents, backpacks, outerwear, clothing and Marmot sleeping bags are still pushing the limits in the planet’s most challenging conditions, from the summits of the world’s highest mountains to the deepest river basins.
