They have zero ankle support. The way the lace eyelets are designed, even though I tightened them to the point of pain, the tops of the boots stayed loose. So, not only do they lack ankle support, but that loose opening is an invitation for snow to get in the boots, another big disadvantage for a winter boot. I'm sure Merrell saved thirty cents per boot by skipping an eyelet at the top, but it really compromises the usefulness of these boots from my perspective. I'll be returning them next week.

Overall, the boots seem to be going the way of the lace.

On the minus side the boots are short, (just above the ankles), and
the padded tongue doesn't allow them to be snugged up.
Without gators, they will fill up with slush and snow. I have worn
them in the woods a couple of times, and have come home with
a nice collection of trail muck trapped in the tops. B+ -
