5.0 out of 5 stars. Great jacket, very versatile as mid- and top-layerVerified Buyer Reviewed by HikerBiker from Kalamazoo, MI on Wednesday, July 1, 2015Super light and comfortable. I'm 5-7, 160, 39-40 chest and have a medium and large. The medium is snug throughout the torso, which I believe is the way it's designed to fit. I use the medium for running and cycling where a snug fit keeps drafts from seeping through the bottom. I wear the large for hiking since the fit is more relaxed. The sleeves are the perfect length - not too long but comfortably stretchy to use thumb holes. I did find that after washing the jacket does tighten up a bit- the large was initially loose on me but fit great after washing. The medium hasn't tightened up as much. Thin baselayers work best with this jacket.

5.0 out of 5 stars. great jacketReviewed by Steamboat from Colorado on Saturday, April 18, 2015I got it this winter, wind resistant front keeps you warm while skiing or biking, fabric on sleeves and back are warm, it is a little longer than needed, hand warmer pocket and an inside pocket for the phone - I wear it as an outer coat and an inner layer

5.0 out of 5 stars. nice jacketReviewed by bill from folsom, ca on Tuesday, April 14, 2015i have worn this kayaking in winter, also layered under a gore tex shell. worked well for both, love the thumbholes, the hybrid alpinist is a little better in that it has more $$ insulation and better venting, but it is also a lot more money, practically speaking not much different. this also can come as a hood version, i like the hood but for some reason they are much more expensive with the hood.

5.0 out of 5 stars. Great for high exertion activitiesVerified Buyer Reviewed by Graphite from Vermont on Wednesday, February 4, 2015I had read on here that this jacket was great for skate skiing. I picked one up for that very reason and can now state the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars. Excellent aerobic activity layer.Verified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from COlorado on Wednesday, February 4, 2015I have not yet used mine but am confident in writing this review as my wife has used hers so much for all types of winter activities that she forced me to buy one for myself. The sole reason I bought it is for the wind barrier up front. My wife finds that this keeps her comfortable in a wide range of temperatures just by zipping and upzipping the front.
I do want to call attention to the Marmot sizing, whereas I wear a large in most jackets, I found that this medium fit much better for any active uses and returned a large I originally ordered. I still have enough for a mid weight layer underneath. I am 5'10", 185 pounds and a 41 chest. -
5.0 out of 5 stars. Love it!Verified Buyer Reviewed by Steve from Utah on Saturday, January 31, 2015Great cycling jacket. I like to wear it as a layer under my Marmot Dri Clime shirt on 20-30 days.

5.0 out of 5 stars. Smart design, looks sharp and functionalVerified Buyer Reviewed by HikerBiker from Kakamazoo on Saturday, September 20, 2014I've yet to find the perfect jacket for cold weather hikes, one that is adequately warm at the beginning but breathes well after passing the 1/2 hour mark. I've had my eye on the Variant for several years but couldn't justify yet another piece of gear, since I already have myriad wind shirts, vests and soft shells. Time will tell if this jacket represents that perfect hiking jacket but initial observations are very positive.
First, it is very, very light and comfortable. I am 5-8, 170, with a 41" chest and the medium was snug, comfortable and the perfect length (arms and torso), so it was ideal for cycling, running; I decided to go with a large, however, since it just felt better (especially for hiking), and was easier to put on over a thicker baselayer. The torso length is 1/2" longer than my Trail Wind Hoody but the same length as my ROM jacket. (Yes, I'm a Marmot fan). The collar is a little too high for me in the front but not a deal breaker. I would highly recommend this jacket. -
5.0 out of 5 stars. Great jacketVerified Buyer Reviewed by El Scorcho from VA on Thursday, July 17, 2014Love the sleek, insulated chest. Athletic cut lends itself well to layering something over it. Definitely something to wear if you plan on being active. May be a bit too thin to wear with just a baselayer in really cold weather.
The stretchy sleeves are great too. Length is long enough to accommodate the thumb holes without seeming too long if you decide not to use them, if that makes sense.
Overall length is nice too. Hits just about waist length for me.
Collar height is nice. Not high enough to feel choke-y, but not low enough to make you question its purpose.
True to size. -
